On clear Sundays, this market is a nice hideaway to escape from the bustle of Shinjuku. The precincts of the shrine are always quiet, like a hole in the middle of the city and its skyscrapers. Here is where visitors can find lots of unidentifiable things, as well as interesting vessels of all kinds, offered mostly at stalls that aren't more than a sheet spread on the ground. Prices are determined by bargaining, whereas it can happen that a vendor offers a discount even though you didn't ask for it. Collecting antiques is perhaps like collecting stories behind things, and even though they may be scary or fishy at times, they are often hooks that connect people to art through a new kind of aesthetic. Whenever you're in the neighborhood and feel tired of the city, pay this market a visit and you'll see.
